This tour focuses on the rich cultural heritage of Southern India and the scenic beauty and wildlife of the Nilgiri Mountains of the Western Ghats. We will enjoy some of the finest Indian classical music and dance at the annual Chennai Music Festival, stroll through ancient palaces and get swept up in the religious fervor at famous temples and pilgrimage sites. We will also visit hill stations to enjoy their cool and peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking beauty. The utopian city of Auroville is for those interested in modern architecture and alternative lifestyles. We will do a cruise on the Keralan backwaters and stay a couple of nights at an ashram. In the Nilgiri mountains we will visit a spice garden, learn about ayurvedic herbs and medicine and we may spot wild elephants and other wildlife in one of the National Parks. You can step back in time viewing the historic ‘Nilgiri Railway’ which travels through spectacular mountain scenery.
